Overview
Kyler Mejia is an attorney (DC Bar admission pending) with experience advising nonprofit tax-exempt organizations, and socially responsible businesses operating both domestically and internationally. Kyler counsels a broad range of nonprofits, including 501(c)(3), (c)(4), (c)(6), (c)(7), (c)(8), and (c)(10) organizations, on a wide array of legal matters. He also acts as outside general counsel to many clients, assisting with issues related to federal tax exemption, corporate governance, contract reviews and drafting, mergers and acquisitions, subsidiaries and affiliates, hybrid corporate structures, partnerships and joint ventures, lobbying and political activity compliance, intellectual property, and more.
Kyler advises clients on qualifying for and maintaining federal tax exemption, impact investing, lobbying and political activity compliance, fundraising regulation, endowment, donor-advised, and restricted fund management, antitrust compliance, and international trade regulation, among other things. He also counsels private foundations on grantmaking procedures, expenditure responsibility, self-dealing, the minimum distribution requirement, excise taxes, and other rules applicable to private foundations.
Kyler is committed to offering practical and strategic solutions to complex legal issues so that nonprofit organizations can focus on their work while protecting their interests and avoiding adverse consequences. He has served organizations ranging from animal welfare groups, refugee resettlement organizations, and healthcare providers to educational institutions, trade and professional associations, religious organizations, nature preserves, and more. Prior to joining TLG, Kyler worked at a boutique law firm located in Tempe, AZ which focuses exclusively on tax-exempt organizations, first as a law clerk while in law school and then full-time as an associate following graduation.
Kyler is currently serving in the American Bar Association Young Lawyer’s Division Leadership Academy. The Academy is a two-year leadership training program and pipeline into national leadership for traditionally underrepresented attorneys. In addition, since 2023, he has been a member of the IRS TEGE Exempt Organizations Council
